Construction is the process of creating and building infrastructure or a facility. It differs from manufacturing in that manufacturing typically involves mass production of similar items without a designated purchaser and construction is typically done on location for a known client. Construction as an industry is six to nine percent of the gross domestic product of developed countries. Construction starts with planning, design, and financing and continues until the project is built and ready for use.

Here are the projects that we've done this semester:-

About Building Construction I

Project 1A: Experiencing Construction (Experiencing, Documentation and Analyzing the Construction Process)

Task of This Project

Produce a complete documentation (pictures, sketches and drawing) and an analysis of construction elements.

  • Understand and explain construction elements and its components.

  • Understand current construction technology on local construction sites.

  • Explain current material and technology in relevance to the present construction industry.

  • Tasks - Methodology Your task is to select an ongoing construction site which visibly demonstrates most of the subject.

Project 2: Construction Detail and Specification

  • To develop an understanding of the structural elements in construction and its application in the construction industry. 

  • To apply suitable construction elements, material and detail/joint solutions suitable for a specific design.

  • To demonstrate a comprehensive understanding and knowledge of build ability. 

  • To demonstrate awareness of how buildings are developed in response to practical considerations. 

  • To demonstrate certain levels of manual drawing and sketching skills. 

  • To allow students to demonstrate their understanding and knowledge of construction, material and technology.  To encourage students to produce manual sketches, drawings and detailing

Objective of This Project

Learning Outcomes of Project 1A and 1B

Upon successful completion of the module, we are able to:

1.To introduce basic principles and procedures of construction process through real-life project (experiential learning)

2. To apply suitable construction elements, material and detail/joint solutions suitable for a specific design.

3. To demonstrate certain levels of manual drawing and sketching skills. 

4. To allow us to demonstrate their understanding and knowledge of construction, material and technology.  To encourage students to produce manual sketches, drawings and detailing.

5. To demonstrate awareness of how buildings are developed in response to practical considerations.

Objective of This Project

  •  To introduce basic principles and procedures of construction process through real-life project (experiential learning)

  •  To understand the sequence and coordination of construction at site.  To expose students to construction technology/methods responding to site context.

  •  To allow student to demonstrate their understanding and knowledge of construction, material and technology.

  •  To train students to produce manual sketches, drawings and detailing relating to EXISTING construction.

For the first project in Building Construction, we are required to form a group of eight and organize a visit to a construction site. The purpose of this visit is to deepen our knowledge in the construction process and compile our findings into a handbook.

The site we have chosen is a residential project named Rimbayu by IJM Land. The construction manager provided us a detailed explanation throughout the tour around the site and generously provided answers to our queries.

As we are required to produce a documentation of our site visit ranging from the beginnings of construction to the end, we delegated the tasks fairly. I am in charge of the foundation system. I find this project particularly useful as it has sharpened my observation skills and also deepened my knowledge on building construction.
